Sling TV Has Been Launched

Owners of Xbox One consoles can now put games on pause and watch live network TV on the console without their hands leaving the controllers. Microsoft announced on Tuesday that Sling TVs service of streaming video is available now through the device.

Sling TV is a subsidiary of the Dish Network and launched its service last month, allowing subscribers to see live broadcasts on television from computers, laptops, iOS and Android smartphones and tablets and Amazon Fire or Roku television boxes.

Users do not have to have their own satellite or cable TV subscription; they only must pay to have Sling TV, which streams the live TV channels over Internet.

The launch today gives Microsoft the first console for video games to offer over the top, live television. It is a massive development on the phenomenon dubbed cord cutting, where the consumers are terminating subscription services for TV to receive on demand of streaming media from companies such as Amazon Instant Video, Hulu and Netflix.

Following the debut today of Sling TV on Xbox One, all current owners of consoles who sign up can receive a free trial for 30 days of the service and those who purchase an Xbox One console in the U.S. can redeem an offer to have three months free service.

Following the free trial, the service will have a cost monthly of $20 for a Best of Live Television core package featuring live streaming of networks such as ESPN, TBS, TNT, Disney Channel, Adult Swim, Food Network, Cartoon Network and HGTV.

Additional package that are “add on” from the streaming service will cost $5 a month and include Sports Extra, which accesses channels such as ESPNEWS, Universal Sports as well as Univision Deportes, and other packages that include movies, news and cooking shows.
