Craig Stephen Hicks, who is 46, fatally shot a dentistry student in his second year, his wife and his sister-in-law in a University of North Carolina apartment complex in Chapel Hill, said police. No information was released about what the possible motive in the alleged crime was.
Dean Barakat who was 23, Yusor Mohammad his wife who was 21 and Razan Mohammad, the sister of Yusor who was 19 were all found dead by officers at the scene. Police had responded to gunfire late Tuesday afternoon in the small town just northwest of the capital of Raleigh. It was reported by a local newspaper that all victims were Muslim.
Law enforcement said Hicks was charged with three counts of murder in the first degree and was held in the county jail in Durham. Officials there said that Hicks would make a courtroom appearance on Wednesday morning.
Yusor Mohammad was planning to start her studies at the school of dentistry at UNC this fall. Her sister Razan was attending North Carolina State, according to police and university officials.
Carol Folt the chancellor at UNC said the entire university felt a deep sadness for the loss of the three. A Facebook page entitled Our Three Winners had been established on Wednesday as a tribute to the three victims.
Barakat was attempting to raise money, as he wanted to take a trip during the summer to Turkey. He was planning to provide dental care in that country to refugees from Syria.
After the shooting took place, dozens of people sent messages and donated money, By Wednesday at 6:00 a.m. ET the Facebook page had taken in more than $22,650, which far exceeded the goal of raising $20,000 before the end of July.
