The Spurs won their fifth NBA title as a franchise on Sunday night after defeating the Miami Heat in Game 5 by the score of 104-87.
The team was denied a championship a year ago by this same Heat team, which made winning it this year all the better and worth the wait.
The win ended Miami’s two-year hold on the NBA Championship. LeBron James said his Heat played very well during the first quarter, but from the start of the second quarter until the end of the game, the Spurs were a better team. He added that was the reason they were the NBA Champions.
San Antonio was down by as many as 16 points during the first quarter before recovering and routing the Heat for the fourth time in five games.
Parker said this season was about redemption. He and his other “Big Three’ teammates knew how close they were to the franchise’s fifth title last year only to see it fall away in Game 6.
Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to earn MVP honors for the series. San Antonio has now won the NBA title in 1999, 2003, ’05, ’07 and ’14. All five titles have been with Gregg Popovich as the head coach and Tim Duncan on the court. Four of the five titles were with the “Big Three’’ of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili.
After the celebrations, there will be questions to face about the age of the Big Three and whether Ginobili, Duncan and even Popovich want to remain.
Miami also has its worries, as their own Big Three of James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh are all potential free agents. Even if the team can sign all three, it will need to bring in some fresh pieces to play around the three top players if they hope to win another NBA title.
Regardless of what happens, the Spurs players, fans and management can savoir this win that has put the team in an elite class and made them a basketball dynasty.
