Toyota remained on top of the world in 2013. The Japanese automaker was the top seller in the world for a second consecutive year, beating out General Motors its U.S. rival by over 270,000 vehicles last year. Toyota also set a very ambitious target for 2014 projecting over 10 million vehicles would be sold.
If Toyota were to reach that mark, it would be the first time any automaker ever reached 10 million in annual sales worldwide. On Thursday, the Japanese automaker said it sold 9.98 million autos across the globe in 2013, which was a 2% increase from 2012.
Toyota has made quite a comeback from the 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Japan’s northeastern region. It damaged the country’s auto suppliers and hobbled company production.
Toyota also released its plans to reach 10.32 million in vehicle sales and produce 10.43 million in 2014.
Last year, General Motors sold 9.71 million vehicles around the world outselling the 9.5 million sold by Volkswagen AG.
In 2012, the global sales crown was recaptured by Toyota from GM, which had the crown as the top selling automaker for over seven decades until it was first surpassed in 2008 by Toyota.
Toyota, which is the maker of the Prius hybrid, Camry sedan and the luxury line Lexus, had strong growth in sales in 2013 in its overseas markets, although its sales dropped in the long stagnant market in Japan.
Sales in the U.S. for Toyota were 2.24 million up over 7% from those in 2012. Sales for Toyota in China were strong as well increasing by 9% to end the year at 917,000.
Toyota remains optimistic over its prospects for 2014 for both the U.S. and China. It expects sales in the U.S. to grow by 3% to over 2.3 million autos, while adding over 20% in China to reach the 1.1 million mark.
The company was its usual low-key over the No. 1 bragging rights for world sales, reiterating what it said in previous years that they only make one car at a time in an attempt to appeal to global consumers.
General Motors had said the same, but being at the top of worldwide sales is a morale booster for every employee in the company.
